Stink bugs.

May 1, 2011 By Wendy Scherer Leave a Comment

If you don’t know what stinkbugs are, you may very well live somewhere where there are no pushpins.

Sadly, I live near the largest pushpin. And boy, oh boy, do we have stink bugs.

It’s my nature to want more information. (Big surprise, right?) So, I ran a social media monitor of the past month on stink bugs. A huge volume of ezine articles and “how to get rid of these creature” articles emerged. And tons of spam. Tons. After cleaning to my relative satisfaction, I learned that there is more talk about stink bugs as the season progresses. Surely not a huge shock. Still, it’s comforting to me to see a graph. (Go ahead, make fun.)

And the map up there? That’s the geographical representation of that data. Very cool. (Though more cool if you live where there’s no pushpin.)

Of course, my next curiosity was sentiment. (Kidding!)

I actually was interested to see what words frequented the posts and updates. Find. Kill. Hate.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

About Wendy Scherer

Wendy knew from her years as a partner with Bozell Worldwide that there was a great need for knowledge synthesis and business research that was more than a mere information dump. To address the market need for finding and digesting complex business research, she founded Scherer Cybrarian in 1995. The business grew and expanded over the years to include primary research, GIS, news aggregation and monitoring, and much more. But what she loved the most was the emerging world of social media research. (Don’t laugh. Everyone should love their work as much as Wendy does!) As this segment grew, it became apparent that this specialty could stand on its own to grow and change with the times. And so, The Social Studies Group was born in 2009.
